Yoga for Beginners:
What You Need to Start Yoga
One of the great things about yoga is that you don’t really need anything to practice yoga. But I can recommend the following to support and enhance your practice. Here are some of the best books, audio instructional CDs and Yoga DVDs for beginning students that I have found (also check the page How to Start a Yoga Practice).
Yoga Books
The truth about Yoga
Yoga, Mastering the Basics
Yoga Zone’s Introduction to Yoga
Yoga DVDs
Yoga For Beginners
Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies
A.M./P.M. Yoga for beginners
Kripalu Yoga: Gentle
Yoga Journal’s: Beginning Yoga Step by Step
Yoga CDs
Drops of Nectar: Yoga Relaxation for Rejuvenation and Healing
Yoga Sanctuary
Yoga Mat
Yoga mat provides padding as well as a non-slip surface to practice on. A classic yoga mat is the best choice for beginners, but upgrading to a thicker mat is recommended if you are practicing on a wood floor.
Yoga Props
Yoga props are very helpful when starting yoga. Use a yoga block to stabilize standing poses, use a yoga strap to go stretch further in seated poses and use a bolster for restorative poses.
Yoga Music CDs
Playing music during your yoga practice will help relax, focus and soothe. See our list of recommended music CDs here
As you can see on the page How to Start a Yoga Practice, you need to know about Yoga Asanas (postures), Yoga Breathing, Yoga Meditation and Yoga Relaxation. So, take a look at this page first, and then read in more detail about 26 asanas/postures, yoga breathing and about yoga meditation and yoga relaxation.
